Legal research & Writing
Instructor: Jillian Williams-Moore
This course is designed to teach paralegals how to effectively conduct legal research. The focus of this class will be on how to find legal materials, including case law, statutes, administrative law, and various secondary sources. Paralegals will learn to use digests and other finding tools, and will learn to update their research by Shepardizing. The course will explore the legal writing process and effective legal writing tools for paralegals. Ethical issues on confidentiality and non-lawyer assistants will also be covered in the course.
Elder Law
Instructor: David Burns
Elder Law is a growing area of legal practice that emphasizes specific issues that effect our aging population. Topics covered include executing and drafting Powers of Attorney and Wills, understanding the basics of Estate Planning, and petitioning for Guardianship. Course format includes lecture and group activities. Special emphasis will be provided regarding an attorney’s ethical responsibilities as they pertain to Elder Law.
