Schedule/Curriculum

With the exception of the Saturday “Kick-Off” session, all class sessions will meet on the same day of the week throughout the 8-month program from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm each night. There is a scheduled winter break to accommodate the holiday season.

Curriculum

Classes will meet one night of the week, the same night, for a 2-hour block in the Bishop’s House on East Campus. The only exception is the first “Saturday Kick Off” to the new certificate.

Intro to Tech Comm (1 session)
Greg Eller
A one-day overview of careers in Technical Communications. Guest speakers will discuss various areas of the Tech Communication profession. Students will also have the opportunity to meet other fellow participants that they will be spending the next 8-months with. An overview of the certificate will be discussed, as well as expectations and requirements for completion.

Essential Skills Course (4 sessions)
Susan Dakin
In this review of advanced writing and editing skills essential for all technical communicators, you will practice recognizing and solving the most common problems in technical writing, illustrated in sentences drawn from real-world technical and business documents.

Technical Writing Workshop (6 sessions)
Jim Sheedy
Learn about prevalent forms of technical writing, such as reports, proposals, and technical descriptions. You will work individually or on small teams.

Tools Overview (3 sessions)
Chris Benz
This course will provide an overview of the most commonly used technical communication tools and how to select the best tools for a successful project.

Information Architecture (6 sessions)
Ann-Marie Grissino
This hands-on class provides strategies for analyzing, categorizing, and "chunking" information - the cutting edge of information structuring.

Managing the Information Development Process (6 sessions)
Larry Kunz
Learn the fundamentals of planning, scheduling, budgeting, tracking, and reporting status; everything you need to manage a one-person project or a large team effort.

Final Project Capstone Course (6 sessions)
Ann-Marie Grissino
Taking all the skills learned throughout the certificate, students will complete a final written project that will be reviewed by a small panel of instructors.
