1. Since you must be registered to receive an educational loan, please return to the registration page, print the registration form, and submit your registration by mail or fax (if you haven't already). Do not submit payment if you plan to borrow the full tuition amount. Be sure you know the exact tuition amount, start date, end date and whether or not books must be purchased separately for your particular program. If books are not included in your tuition, note the estimated cost of books.
2. Print
these instructions for reference and read them to the end before starting the SLM online application.
3. Gather information described below under the blue bar: "How to Begin the SLM Online Loan Application".
4. Go to www.salliemae.com/cel for information about SLM Continuing Education Loans. On the SLM web site follow only the information for Continuing Education loans. Since Federal loans are not applicable, please do not submit FAFSA forms.
5. If you choose to apply for this loan, click "Ready to apply?" on the www.salliemae.com/cel page .
6. If your program begins within 90 days and you have already registered, you may proceed to submit the loan application by then clicking "Apply now".
7. Begin online application process as described below.
HOW TO BEGIN THE SLM ONLINE LOAN APPLICATION
Select the state: Choose NC
Select the school: Choose the Duke program:
- DUKE UNIVERSITY -- PROFESSIONAL CERT
(Please do not choose just "Duke University" which may also appear in the selection list.)
Enter Contact Name at School: Type in "Duke Continuing Studies"
As you continue the SLM application by filling in the blanks and making selections as appropriate, Sallie Mae will ask for the following personal information:
- Your drivers' license number (if you do not have a license, enter n/a)
- Your Social Security number
- Your email address
- Prior address (if you have moved in the last year)
- Two references (name, address and phone number)
- Co-signers email address (if applicable)
As you complete the Eligibililty and Credit Check sections, you'll need the following information relating to our Duke Continuing Studies programs. Please make entries according to the instructions below to avoid delay and inconvenience.
Enrollment Period:
- Enter your program's begin and end dates.
- If you are in the Online-based Paralegal program, for purposes of the loan application, your "begin date" is the date two weeks after you submit the application, and the "end date" is the date 6 months later.
Total Loan Amount requested: Enter the total amount you wish to borrow, including both tuition and any amount you wish to borrow for required books. Tuition Cost + Book Cost
Tuition Amount: Enter the tuition cost you wish to borrow, not including any amount for books. Tuition Cost only.
(If you wish to borrow only part of your tuition and use another payment method also, stop here and call the Duke Continuing Studies Registration/Loan Specialist at 919-684-6259 before proceeding. She will help you determine the correct amounts to enter for "Total Loan Amount Requested" and "Tuition Amount".)
Additional Expenses: If you choose to borrow the cost of required books in addition to tuition, then enter the amount you wish to borrow for books here. This "additional expense" amount is disbursed directly to the student, while the tution amount is disbursed to Duke University. If you do not wish to borrow the cost of books, enter "0" here. Book Cost only or 0.
Anticipated Graduation Date: Same as the date classes end.
School Disbursement Information: Enter only in the space labeled Disbursement 1
- School Disbursement Date: We suggest that you enter the date that is 10 days prior to your program's begin date.
- School Disbursement Amount: Enter the same amount you entered for Tuition Amount. Tuition Cost only
.Before clicking the button to "Submit Credit", double check to be sure that:
- School Disbursement Amount + Additional Expenses = Total Loan Amount Requested and
- Tution Amount + Additional Expenses = Total Loan Amount Requested
INFORMATION FOR NEXT STEPS IN THE SLM ONLINE LOAN APPLICATION
After clicking "Submit Credit", you will be shown results of the credit inquiry. If pre-approved, you will be shown interest rates and fees. You may choose to apply with a cosigner (who will have to apply separately) or continue the application process on your own.
Cosigners: If you choose to use a cosigner, SLM will send an email to the cosigner with a Confirmation Number, PIN, and instructions on how to log into the SLM online system to complete the cosigner portion of the application.
As you continue the application, you will come to spaces asking for:
- Enrollment Status : Less than half time
- Corporate Code: Leave blank
- School Contact: First Name - Duke
Last Name - Continuing Studies
To avoid delays and inconvenience, please double check that Enrollment Status is selected correctly as "Less than half time". An error in this field may require you to re-sign new documents.
Submit Application: When you click the "Submit Application" button, you will see a response screen within about one minute. If approved, you will see a screen that contains loan documents which you can immediately print or save.
Review Documents and E-signature Option: After carefully reviewing the contents of these documents if you wish to enter into the loan agreement, you may continue with the E-signature process for faster processing, or may sign on paper and submit to SLM by mail.
E-signature: Follow instructions for the e-signature and printing the e-signed documents. Be sure to print or save a copy of your e-signed documents for reference. You will be instructed to complete the loan process by sending SLM all additional items requested from you according to the checklist on your loan documents cover sheet. SLM’s fax number for this purpose is 317-806-4872.
Paper signature: If you wish to sign on paper, first print the documents and sign. Then mail the signed documents to SLM along with all additional items requested from you according to the checklist on your loan documents cover sheet. Use the SLM mailing address printed on the documents.
Log-in: After the "final instructions" page, you will see a screen called "Log-in". Click the "register" button to create an account so you can follow up later with the processing of your loan.
Send required items to SLM: If you are notified that SLM is missing documents required to complete the loan process, fax these to SLM at 317-806-4872.
SCHOOL CERTIFICATION
If your loan is approved, SLM will contact Duke Continuing Studies to verify your enrollment.
If SLM contacts Duke Continuing Studies regarding a problem with your loan documents, or indicates that your requested items have not been received, your enrollment status could be affected.
