Nonprofit Management

Overview

Nonprofit organizations provide vital services that markedly contribute to the health of our communities. The goal of the Duke Nonprofit Management Certificate is to ensure that these vital services continue to grow in scope and quality. The Program has proven that pursuit of the Certificate results in better-managed nonprofits that translate into more vigorous communities.

We believe that fundamental organizational and management principles can be used by leaders in the nonprofit sector to strengthen both their systems and service delivery. The Nonprofit Management Certificate provides affordable, practical and accessible information to people working in and with the nonprofit arena, whether they are paid staff, directors, board members, philanthropists or volunteers. It integrates Duke University’s commitment to academic excellence with the practical wisdom of the instructors and the realistic work experience of the participants.

The Nonprofit Management Certificate is earned at the completion of 50 classroom hours. There are no admissions requirements for the Certificate, and no grades or exams. Thus, attendance at every hour of class is required. Partial attendance in any class does not count toward the Certificate.

Beginning in Fall 2007, self-paced online courses will be available within the Program.  These courses tackle skills important to the management and fiscal support of nonprofit organizations.  Please visit the online course demo site, using ‘duke’ as the username, and ‘demo’ as the password and search for online offerings (please search by site, and choose Online Courses).  These courses will count towards 50 hours required to complete the Nonprofit Management Certificate. Participants must login within 30 days upon receiving their username and password. Online courses must be completed by the end of the corresponding term.

Nonprofit Management Certificate courses cover such practical and necessary topics as:

Fund Raising
Marketing
Management and Leadership
Information Technology
Finance

The Nonprofit Management Certificate is designed to be specifically customized by the courses you take, directly addressing the issues that matter to you and your organization. Courses across the state are open to any participant, regardless of location. Instructors of all Certificate courses are established practitioners from a variety of disciplines within the nonprofit arena. Many instructors are also Nonprofit Management Certificate holders.
