Action Science Camp for Young Women

Academic Life

Duke Action for young girls promotes scientific discovery through field and laboratory experiences. The camp is designed to build upon campers' existing science skills, promote an understanding and appreciation of environmental issues, and develop confidence through activity-centered learning. Participants examine ecological and biological principles through explorations of terrestrial and aquatic life, chemical and physical properties of the environment, and the impact of human activities on ecosystems.

Learning activities in the instructional areas of arborology, land forms, critterology, and wild crafting are conducted at field sites in the Duke University Forest and Duke University’s biology laboratories. Hands-on activities, games and simulations bring scientific concepts to life. Campers are encouraged to reflect on their personal experiences about camp activities and scientific issues through journal writing. Opportunities are also provided for students to interact with and learn from professional scientists.

Criteria

The program is designed for young women who are in grades 5-7 during the 2007-2008 academic year. The curriculum is designed so that students who have average or above-average academic ability will benefit most from the program. Attendees should have a genuine enthusiasm for science (particularly biological science), active learning, and field work. Participants should be prepared to spend a lot of time outdoors, in the heat and humidity of the summertime, with insects and other creatures whose habitats they will be exploring!
