Biosciences & Engineering Camp
Academic Life
How close are we to building a living, sensing, moving artificial human being? Come explore the engineering and biology behind the complex machine that is the human body. Through laboratory experiments, field trips, and cutting edge lab visits, participants will be introduced to mechanics, sensing, communication and energy -- important underlying factors in creating new "life". Participants will learn about the cell, the building block of all living things, as well as anatomy and systems of the human body. Participants will also be introduced to the function and structure of DNA and general principles of genetics. Participants will also have opportunities to develop their skills in critical thinking and problem solving. They will be expected to reflect daily on their experiences, and make an oral presentation to the camp on the last day.
Criteria
The program is open to students who are in grades 6 - 8 during the 2007-2008 academic year. The curriculum is designed for students who have demonstrated a genuine interest in science, engineering, math and technology. Participants will also need to be able to work well independently, as well as, in groups.
