Drama Workshop

Academic Life

The Duke Drama Workshop offers high school students an intense drama experience, which culminates with a final performance. The workshop provides a supportive environment for students who are committed to refining their skills and building a community of actors. Participants attend daily acting classes to learn the creative and technical processes of acting and rehearsal periods of selected scenes from plays under the direction of professional educators, actors, and artists. Based on their individual areas of interest, students select from several acting classes and rehearsal periods representing drama, musical theater, and comedy.

Please note that this is a particularly rigorous program that demands significant amount of time, energy, and dedication. Participants are expected to spend out-of-class time reading plays, memorizing lines, watching video tapes, and coaching one another. Some rehearsals may be scheduled for night or weekend times.

Criteria

This program is open to students who are in grades 9, 10 and 11 during the 2007 -2008 academic year. While there are no formal entrance criteria, the program is designed for students with an intense interest in drama and desire to improve their skills and knowledge. Participants must be self-motivated, self-disciplined, socially mature, and cooperative.

Format

Each day, students are involved in three primary activities: morning gathering, acting class, and play rehearsal. Morning gathering is a time for all participants and staff to come together in preparation for the day's activities. Announcements and messages will be shared, followed by exercises to warm up the body and spirit for the work ahead. In the morning acting class students will study and practice different acting techniques and participate in various class activities to improve skills. Emphasis will also be placed on voice and movement. Rehearsals will usually be in the afternoon or at night. Each of the instructors will direct a small group production of scenes. Prior to the beginning of camp, students will have the chance to prioritize which rehearsal group they wish to join based on the playwrights or theme. The small group format allows for all participants to have leading roles. On the last day of the program, families and friends are invited to attend a final performance of productions.
