Botany through the Arts

Do you enjoy spending time outside studying the natural environment? Are you inspired to learn new artistic methods such as plein air painting? Discover how the arts and sciences intersect as you investigate the complex relationship between humans and plants!

Investigate plant life at Duke as you explore significant locations across campus! From the air we breathe to the foods we eat, plants provide us with many natural resources. Create an artistic portfolio of plant organisms that you observe on Duke’s campus. Research and discuss characteristics, taxonomy, and adaptations of plant life. Learn about the styles and techniques of famous artists as you sharpen your own artistic skillset. Conduct hands-on experiments and collect data on the complex impact humans have on plants.

The course will culminate in your creation of an original piece of mixed media art using mediums and techniques such as collage, sketching and painting. Merge your scientific interests and the arts as you immerse in plant biology and ecology at Duke!
